Byrd Is The Word
This project debuted at Camden High School in the summer of 2004, exposing students to Byrd's "Music plus Math Equals Art" formula. Byrd, the most sampled musician on the planet by hip-hop artists, is now focused on what he's dubbed WAR - Writing, Arithmetic and Reading - and combating ignorance. In this program, he served as a guest artist while his protege, Jonathan Whitney taught students how to create melodies using their cell phones. The students then created prose, poems and raps based on Byrd's history and their words were recorded against a musical backdrop of the cell phone melodies.
